Attendance Procedure Update

    Attending school each day is the first step to student success in school. Recognizing the importance of school attendance, the state legislature revised our state law RCW 28A.225 on compulsory school attendance.

    Beginning March 27, 2017, the revised attendance procedure 3122P was implemented in all schools to establish and support consistent attendance practices districtwide for:

    • excusing absences
    • recording absences
    • conducting meetings
    • communications with parents/guardians to discuss student absences
    • parameters for pre-arranged absences for vacation or travel

    The revised and updated information for procedure 3122P will be included in the printed and online Student Responsibilities and Rights handbook and provided to students and parents for the 2017-18 school year.

    Q.  How does this change what I do?

    A. If you call into our 24 hour attendance line and leave a voicemail message, you must then either:

    1) send an email from the email account you have on file with us with all the required information to verify the absence

    2) fill out our Excused Absence Form and submit to the office to verify the absence

    3) send in a hand written note with all the required information on it to verify the absence

    Q. So, even though I called in, I still have to send in a note in writing?

    A. Yes.

    Q. Why?

    A. Changes were made by the state legislature in second substitute HB 2449 that concerns compulsory school attendance. The revisions are specific to the role and responsibility of the district concerning absenteeism and the resources available to assist students and families to correct absentee behaviors. These revisions to the procedures will help establish and support district wide processes for excusing and recording absences.

    Q. What is “all the required information” I must include in this written notice?

    A. Student name;

    Student ID number;

    Teacher name;

    Date(s) of the absence;

    Reason for the absence;

    Parent/guardian name;

    Parent/guardian signature;

    Phone number where the note can be verified.

    The principal (or designee) has the authority to determine if an absence meets the above criteria for an excused absence.

    Thank you in advance for your continued cooperation and support as local and state law continues to evolve.
