Everett Public Schools staff follow a complex process that prioritizes the safety of our students and staff when
making decisions about changes to school status due to inclement weather.
NOAA, AccuWeather and other weather forecasts are monitored the day before a storm is predicted and
during the early morning hours.
District emergency response staff members are notified of the possibility of weather issues and prepares for road evaluations and communicating with families and staff.
By 3 a.m., security or custodial staff who work the graveyard shift notify leadership if conditions may require school closure or late start.
District emergency response staff members begin road evaluations and report by 4:15 a.m. Staff members drive around portions of the district checking on road conditions (downed tree limbs, electrical lines, or road hazards), walking conditions (icy sidewalks), driveway and parking lot conditions and whether buildings are functional (electricity, heat, etc.) and report by 4:15 a.m.
By 4:20 a.m., a recommendation about school operations is made based on the weather forecast, current weather
conditions, input from neighboring districts, and driving conditions and the superintendent makes a decision.
Between 4:30 and 5:45 a.m., the communications department posts announcement on the district website, social media, and FlashAlert, which local news stations use for their scrolling announcements during their broadcasts.
By 5:45 a.m., the communications department notifies families and staff of the closure or delay using the district
communication system (phone, email, text).
The ability of staff to get to school safely and on time. Many staff, bus drivers and custodians are the first staff to be on the roads, some from outlying areas, where conditions may be worse.
Providing a consistent message for working parents who leave home before their children leave for school.
The weather forecast for later in the day.
Is it an early release day? If so, would a two-hour delay cause more of an inconvenience for families to drop off, and then pick up just a few hours later?
What after school events are planned and when are they scheduled to finish?
